What Determines the Pricing of a Guitar?

RAW MATERIALS

Woods: Different woods determine the price by their availability, or aesthetic value. For example, Brazilian Rosewood is a protected tree. To use a part of one, the tree must either fall on it's own, or, a limb must fall off. This is why Indian Rosewood is used on most production instruments, and Brazilian Rosewood is rationed for special instruments.

Electronics: Depending on the quality of the electronics, whether they are factory manufactured or hand generated. i.e. Hand wound pickups are more expensive than machine wound.

Hardware: Metals and machining used to create the hardware determines its cost. (i.e., Vintage Style tuning machines are less expensive than modern locking machines.)

Cosmetics: The cosmetics of a guitar give the instrument aesthetic value which is achieved through the appearance of the wood, detail in the inlay and glossy lacquer finishes versus satin finishes, etc.

PLAYABILITY & SOUND QUALITY

Woods: The types of wood used in the construction of a guitar will determine how well it will resonate and the tonal quality it will produce. For example, mahogany has a darker tone than ash or alder.

Neck Designs: Different neck size and fingerboard radius will change how a particular guitar handles. This is a subjective matter and is purely personal preference.

COLLECTIBILITY

The quantity of guitars built affects how valuable the instrument will become. A limited edition guitar will be more likely to appreciate in value over a production model. Market demands for a particular instrument will also determine its collectability.
