How to Setup a School Ukulele Class

School Ukulele classes and programs are becoming very popular these days. Many schools are starting up "ukulele labs" that allow students to play together in groups and learn this fun instrument.

There are a few essentials you will need to setup a Ukulele Group Class

1. Quality ukulele instruments that will last for years.

For everyday classroom use by beginners, we recommend a solid well made instrument from companies like Kala Brand Ukuleles or Lanikai. An expensive or well made ukulele will suffice.

Important:Beware of inexpensive instruments in the $20-$30 range. These are essentially toys and will be hard to tune and play. They will not give your students a chance to properly explore the instrument.

2. Instructional books (appropriate to age levels) to help the student learn.

We recommend the Hal Leonard series of books but there are many to choose from out there.

3. A way to tune the instrument (electronic or pitch pipe tuner).

There are two different types of tuners for ukulele. Electronic tuners and pitch pipes. There are benefits to both.

Electronic tuners are the simplest way to tune the instrument and very accurate.

Pitch pipe tuners are less accurate and rely on the ear of the student/teacher to determine if the instrument is in tune or not. Pitch pipe tuners do aid in ear training, too, which is another benefit for a musician.

We recommend the Kala Ukulele KC-02 Electronic Ukulele Tuner or the Kala Ukulele Pitch Pipe tuner.

4. A bag to store and protect the instrument when not in use.

To protect the ukulele for years from damage and humidity, it is important to have the students store them in cases when not in use. Our kits contain a padded "gig bag" that protects the ukulele.

5. Extra sets of strings in the event that strings break during the class.

Having extra sets of strings on hand is a great idea in a student accidentally breaks a string. One of the strongest and longest lasting set of ukulele strings on the market are the Aquila brand strings. These strings come in Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone.
