In 1959, Ray Lubow patented the oil can delay, a unique electro-static delay system using oil in a rotating drum to create a distinctive echo with vibrato and slapback elements. Lubow licensed this technology to brands like Fender, Gibson, and Rickenbacker before launching Morley, which produced oil can delays until 1989.

At Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival in 2022, JHS founder Josh Scott discussed unusual delays with guitarist Nels Cline, who later asked if JHS made an oil can-style delay. Though they didn’t at the time, Josh and his team built one, which Nels loved and used on Wilco’sCruel CountryandCousin. While not an artist signature model, this pedal was inspired by that conversation, and now it’s available for your collection.
