The PRS S2 Vela blends vintage personality with modern reliability. Its solid mahogany body wears a contoured offset shape that sets it apart from the rest of Paul Reed Smith's lineup — bold, elegant, and a little edgy — while the mahogany neck's Pattern Regular carve and 22-fret, 10-inch-radius rosewood fingerboard deliver the comfortable, familiar playability PRS is known for, right down to the bird inlays.
Tone comes courtesy of USA-made, pickguard-loaded pickups and electronics. The PRS DS-01 bridge humbucker is bright and punky with a bell-like quality that covers overdriven leads and crystalline cleans alike, and the Narrowfield mini humbucker at the neck combines the best traits of a humbucker, a P-90, a traditional single-coil, and a mini humbucker in one voice. A push-pull coil tap on the tone knob adds a full arsenal of spanky single-coil textures.
The hardware is straightforward and rock solid. The PRS plate-style bridge harkens back to Paul Reed Smith's earliest designs: an aluminum plate with two compensated brass saddles for accurate intonation and long sustain, plus top-loading string changes.
